About English City Stone
English City Stone - the history
Our company has been established for over 25 years. We began life as landscapers specialising in stonework, but encompassing all areas of hard and soft landscaping.
During the late 1990's we opened a retail stone merchants in Clapham, south west London. Following this we began working in our current specialised area, using our established relationships with various quarries to ensure that we offer our customers the highest quality materials at the best prices.
Highly Specialised Stone Fitters
The reinstatement of Victorian and Georgian style Yorkstone and Portland Stone steps is highly involved and requires an acute knowledge of the materials and the structural implications of removing an existing set of steps.
In order to provide you with the best possible service we use only our own employees and do not subcontract stonework to any other companies. Our staff are friendly and knowledgeable and we pride ourselves on the quality of our craftsmanship.

A thoroughly pleasurable experience from start to finish using English City Stone. The craftmanship of the front door threshold stone, Victorian path design and bespoke metal fencing is a joy to see and has been commented on by all neighbours. First class company – highly recommended.
- Clive G, London W3
I want to thank you for my very beautiful front steps, tiles and railings. I am delighted with them. A couple of visitors have referred to them, rightly, as a ‘work of art’. All who worked on the project were a pleasure to have on site.
- Louise W., London NW6
A first class excellent job well done. What else can I and my neighbours say? Thanks a million to you and your team of craftsmen.
- Brett B., London N1
May I thank you for an extremely successful project. The result looks quite beautiful and the workmanship is exceptional.
- Martin A., London SE26
Thanks again for the work - we're very pleased and the damp smell has already gone from the basement despite all the recent rain!
- Barry W., London SE13
Thank you for all the care and attention on our job. If you are passing you are always welcome here! Thank you to everyone at ECS.
- Arthur M., London SW18
With many thanks for an excellent job. The two young men were hard working and courteous and a pleasure to have on the premises.
- Baroness James, London W11
It is such a visual pleasure to see such beautifully crafted and expertly fitted York stone steps that now adorn the front of our home. Even when it rains they look amazing as the water runs perfectly off each of the twelve steps.
It is a very very difficult task finding craftsmen these days. English City Stone are the exception!! Everything went swimmingly well except the weather.
- David R., London NW3
The steps arrived as you said they would on Tuesday, and my builder put them in on Thursday. The steps are truly beautiful, the perfect finishing touch.
- Sophia W., Cambridge CB4
With many thanks for a superb job. It was a pleasure to get to know you and I will have no hesitation in recommending you to family, friends and colleagues.
- Ruth C., London SW6
I have been very happy with the standard of workmanship and whilst all your workers have been pleasant, professional and hard-working I would particularly like to praise Rob who has shown a particular dedication towards ensuring that the job is done to a very high standard. I have also entrusted my house key with him for the duration of the works, including whilst I am away on holiday.
... I would have no hesitation in recommending your company to the many neighbours who are likely to admire my steps in the future.
- Pat M., London SE11
